Catena has done more work on Malbec than any other winery, and the results are evident in its wines. This is a savoury, densely structured red with masses of colour and even more fruit.

The intensity of the sun means the Cabernet Sauvignon is outstanding - this is a great example and it will develop for many years.

  • Catena Chardonnay 2000, 90 POINTS PDF File
One of the 29 GREAT VALUES of the  top 100.
Delicious stuff. Juicy, with fig, pineapple and pear flavors, fat texture, and a long, bright fin-ish that lets the flavors hang on. Nicolás Catena, winemaker José Galante and vineyard manager Pedro Marchevsky have put this winery at the head of the pack in Argentina. The fruit for this wine comed from vineyards at an elevation of 3,100 feet, located in the Luján de Cayo district of Mendoza. The name of the winery recently changed to Bodega Catena Zapata.
    Wine Spectator, December 31, 2002-Jan 15, 2003
  • "Catena Chardonnay Agrelo Vineyard 2000, 90 POINTS
Minerals, spices and copious quantities of white fruit can be found in this wine’s aromatics. It is extremely vinous with a sappy character. Pears, candied apples, spices and anise can be found throughout this gorgeous wine’s deep core of fruit, as well as in its long, satiny finish. It is highly expressive, well-balanced and a delight to drink."
Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, Issue 140, April 2002
  • "Catena Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Vineyard 1999, 90 POINTS
This medium to dark ruby-colored Cabernet is a highly aromatic, blackberry-dominated wine. Hugely concentrated and viscous, it coats the taster's palate with wave after wave of blackberry liquer. Additionally its flavor' s last throughout the extraordinarily long finish. It is an exceptionally well-made wine that puts to shame many California Cabernets at two to three times the price."
Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, Issue 140, April 2002
  • "Catena Cabernet Sauvignon 1999, 90 POINTS
Ripe, with raspberry and cassis fruit that grips the palate, while chocolate and toast notes work their way in on the finish. Shows concentration and length, with a second wave of fruit on the finish. Drink now through 2004."
Wine Spectator Weekly, April 25, 2002
  • "Catena Chardonnay 2000, 90 POINTS
Delicious stuff. Juicy, with fig, pineapple and pear flavors, fat texture, and a long, bright finish that lets the flavors hang on."

  • "1996 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Vineyard (90):
The opaque, dark, ruby-colored 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Vineyards is impressively intense, concentrated, and flavorful. Red fruits and assorted oak spice give way to a full-bodied, palate-coating personality. Its flavor profile, packed with cassis, blackberries, fresh herbs, and lavish oak, also reveals a touch fresh mint in its long and ripe, tannin-filled finish."
The Wine Advocate, May 2001, USA
  • "1999 Catena Malbec (90)
Serious Malbec. Dense, with a brooding feel to the smoky currant, plum and spice flavors, this Argentine red is really packed with fruit, with ripe, thick tannins coming in on the finish. Just needs a little time to strut its stuff."
Wine Spectator, May 31, 2001, USA
  • 1999 Catena Chardonnay Agrelo Vineyard Five Stars
"Rich and very complex in style, this is an outstanding Chardonnay at the price. It is supple, complex (citrus fruit, roasted nut, vanilla, toast and baked apple) and very long on the palate. Great value."
    Restaurant Wine 2001, USA
  • "1997 Catena Malbec (89)"
International Wine Cellar, March/April, 00', USA
  • "1997 Catena Malbec:
Huge depth of flavour, made by the master of Malbec. Deep rich colour with bags of fruit, but enough balance so it doesn't over-whelm food. Another one were value exceeds price."
Yorkshire Post Magazine, Ch. Austin, February 2001, UK
  • "One of the finest wineries in South America, Catena has fashioned two high quality wines...The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Vineyard (rating 90) reveals a healthy dark ruby/purple color, followed by intense, rich, black currant fruit nicely infused with toasty oak and spice. This is a concentrated wine with a sweet, ripe, highly-extracted mid-palate, ripe tannin, and good delineation...this wine appears capable of evolving and improving over the next 2-3 years, and lasting for a decade or more...The 1996 Chardonnay Agrelo Vineyard (rating 88) exhibits a Burgundian-like leesy, smoky, toasty, roasted nut, and tropical fruit scented nose of moderate complexity. In the mouth, it is rich, concentrated, and nicely textured, with medium to full body, and gobs of ripe, honeyed, citrusy fruit with orange and tangerine notes. This is a delicious, complex, Burgundian-styled Chardonnay for drinking over then next 2 years."
    The Wine Advocate,
    Robert Parker, June 2000
  • "I was knocked out by the 1994 Catena Chardonnay Agrelo Vineyard (rating 90). Aromatically it is reminiscent of a top premier or grand cru from Mersault or Chassagne Montrachet...The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Agrelo Vineyard (rating 89+) reveals a dark garnet/ruby color, followed by a spicy, currant nose with hints of chocolate, smoke, and tobacco. This rich, well endowed Cabernet is still young; it promises to improve for 2-3 years and last for a decade. Don't be surprised to see it merit an even higher rating."
The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker, April 1996.
  • Chose Catena 1995 Chardonnay as one of six best wines drunk in 1997 and wrote the following, "Catena 1995... the Chardonnay revelation of the year...reminded me of Les Pierres from Sonoma Cutrer, but this time to Les Pierres disadvantage."
    Decanter, Hugh Johnson, December 1997.
  • "Catena is making Argentina's only world-class wines today. But there's no secret to the winery's success. It's the natural result when owner, winemaker and vineyard manager all have outstanding skills and experience."
The Wine Spectator, Thomas Matthews, November 1995.
